Who we are

Who we are

Nova Muixeranga is a group of men and women who, led by a mestre (master in Catalan), build a wide range of human towers while sounds a tune called La Muixeranga.

Muixeranga performances are structured in three mixed parts: the dance, human towers and living pictures. The difference between these last two parts lies in the intention. While the human towers try to amaze with their height, living pictures want to represent religious or pagan scenes with balance and strength.

According to technique, basic structural elements of our towers and pyramids are: tronc (catalan word referring to every floor of people, with a child at the very top) and pinya (referring to all the people on the ground holding the structure).

Muixeranga's performances are accompanied by a group of musicians who play, with dolçaina and tabal (typical Valencian instruments), three diferent melodies: the one that accompanies our dance, the well known as La Muixeranga that is played when we build human towers, and a third one which is played when we stage the living picture also known as L'Enterro (The Funeral).

The first aim of our association was to integrate into our tradition women and all those who wish to participate. Currently, one of our objectives is to spread elsewhere our inherited knowledge and custom. To transmit our tradition and to make Muixeranga known as an important part of our country's popular culture.

We also like to unite us with other similar cultural expressions: castellers, moixigangues, falcons... or any other kind of dance as old as ours: The Stilt Dance (Anguiano, La Rioja), Dance of Tauste (Aragon)...
